Handrails

ADA specifies handrail requirements for all elevator cabs:

  • Required on: At least one wall (recommended on all non-door walls)

  • Clearance: 1.5 inches minimum between handrail and wall

Control Panel (Car Operating Panel - COP)

The car operating panel must be accessible to all users:

  • Height range: All buttons between 15 inches (bottom) and 48 inches (top) above floor for side reach
  • Braille: Raised characters and Grade II Braille adjacent to all buttons
  • Tactile floor designation: Raised standard alphabet characters (minimum 5/8 inch high, 1/32 inch raised)

Floor Designations (Jamb Plates)

Each floor must be identified on both door jambs:

  • Location: Both sides of the door frame, 60 inches above floor
  • Characters: Minimum 2 inches high, raised 1/32 inch, with accompanying Braille
  • Star marking: Main entry level identified with a tactile star

Floor Surface

  • Slip-resistant: Coefficient of friction minimum 0.6
  • Level: No changes greater than 1/4 inch without beveling
  • Flush transitions: Cab floor must be level with landing within 1/2 inch and 1-1/4 inch horizontally
  • Carpet: If installed, maximum pile height 1/2 inch, securely attached, firm cushion or no cushion

Signage

  • Car position indicator: Visual and audible floor announcements
  • Emergency communication: Instructions in both visual and tactile formats
  • Pictograms: International symbols where applicable (telephone, alarm)

Lighting

While ADA doesn't specify a minimum lux level for elevator cabs, it requires:

  • Sufficient illumination to read signage and identify buttons
  • Emergency lighting during power failures
  • No glare that impedes reading of Braille or raised characters

Industry standard is 100-200 lux at floor level, with higher levels at the control panel.

Common Compliance Mistakes

1. Panel Thickness Reducing Cab Width

When renovating, thick new wall panels can reduce cab dimensions below ADA minimums. A 1-inch panel on each side wall removes 2 inches from cab width — potentially dropping below the 54-inch or 68-inch requirement.

Solution: Measure carefully before specifying panel thickness. Use thinner materials or recess panels into existing wall structure.

2. Handrail Height After Floor Replacement

New flooring changes the floor-to-handrail measurement. A 1/2-inch-thick floor overlay raises the floor, effectively lowering the handrail. If your existing handrail is at the minimum 32 inches, a thick floor could push it below compliance.

Solution: Verify handrail height from the FINISHED floor surface, not the structural floor.

3. COP Button Obstructions

Decorative panels, thick finishes, or protruding handrails near the COP can obstruct wheelchair side-reach access. ADA requires clear approach to the entire panel.
